NEW DELHI: Rajeev Ouseph, An Indian-origin British shuttler for Delhi Acers brought curtains over the Premier Badminton League late on Sunday evening with his Trump match to overcome RMV Gurusaidutt’s challenge 15-11, 15-6 to help Delhi win the PBL title 4-3.

Earlier, Mumbai Rockets were up with H.S. Prannoy when Delhi Acer’s top player Tommy Sugiarto put up a great comback to equal scores with Mumbai Rockets. Tommy not only overcame stiff challenge from Prannoy to keep his all win record in the league this year unscathed, he also had to overlook court invasion by dancing girls during breaks. To counter Prannoy’s powerful smashes, Sugiarto kept on probing his backhand and the result started showing. Prannoy didn’t have a Plan to outwit the Indonesian in his third game, as he was tired in the third game. Sugiarto won 13-15, 15-9, 15-9.

The mixed doubles pair of Kamilla Juhl and Vladimor Ivanov had given Mumbai the lead after quickly seeing off the meek challenge from Akshay Dewalkar and Giselle Adcock at the Siri Fort Complex.

Koo Kiet Kien and Tan Boon Heong, Delhi Acers’ men’s doubles pair from Malaysia, increased the lead when they got the better of Mathia Boe and Vladimir Ivanov 14-15, 15-10, 15-14. Down 1-2, Mumbai showed their trump card with Han Li challenging Delhi’s P.C. Thulasi. Li, the only Chinese representative in the final, lost the first game but managed to outclass in the next two to win 1215, 15-8, 15-8, thus giving Mumbai the advantage at 3-2.

Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Ritesh Deshmukh added fun to the atmosphere with their presence. They even tried their hands at a doubles game with P.V. Sindhu and Jwala Gutta as the ‘main actors’ waited in the green room for the fun time to end.

Results: Kamilla JuhlVladimor Ivanov (MR) bt Akshay DiwalkarGiselle Adcock (DA) 15-6, 15-12. Tommy Sugiarto (DA) bt HS Prannoy (MR) 13-15, 15-9, 15-9. Koo Kiet Kien Tan Boon Heong (DA) bt Mathias Boe Vladimir Ivanov (MR) 14-15, 15-10, 15-14. Han Li (MR) bt P.C. Thulasi (DA) 12-15, 15-8, 15-8. Rajiv Ouseph (DA) bt Gurusaidutt (MR) 15-11, 15-6.

NEW DELHI: Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Wednesday applauded the decision with the Supreme Court passing the High Court’s stay order on the Premier Badminton League

Mr. Akilesh Das Gupta.

Dr. Akilesh Das Gupta.

“Some vested interests were against the spirit of the game and they have been trying to create hurdles. The recent issue raised by them was totally baseless,” said BAI President & PBL Chairman Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta.

“The Badminton Association of India (BAI) didn’t even know of any such details. We are grateful to the honourable Supreme Court, who has always supported the right and in this case also, it has favoured us by quashing the stay order.

“The Premier Badminton League is now clear of all obstacles and the Supreme Court’s order is big assurance to all the stakeholders, including franchisees, players, coaches and sponsors.”

The Meghalaya High Court had stayed the tournament based on a petition filed by Soubhagaya Media Private Limited who challenged the validity of the franchisee meet held in New Delhi on December 6.

The BAI soon sprang into action and approached the Supreme Court to seek immediate stay on the HC order and allow it to hold the tournament.

The PBL will start on 2nd January in Mumbai. This league will bring together India’s top badminton players along with international players on the same platform. The final will be hosted in Delhi on January 17.
