Gopchand’s children win titles

HYDERABAD: On a day when three shuttlers achieved a grand double each at the ONGC National Sub-Junior Ranking Tournament, chief coach Pullela Gopichand’s children clinched national ranking titles for the first time in the same tournament.

Gayatri, the 12 year old, who won several national titles and also bronze at the Asian meet, won the girls under-15 singles and doubles titles while her little brother 10-year-old Sai Vishnu won in the under-13 doubles category.

Gayatri defeated her doubles partner Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka 21-15, 21-12 for the singles crown. Later the duo eased past Karnataka’s Ananya Praveen and Medha Shashidharan in straight games 21-10, 21-9.

Mansi Singh from Uttar Pradesh stayed on top by winning the girls singles and doubles titles in the under-13 category. Mansi recovered after losing the second game to get past second seed Tasnim Mir of Gujarat 21-10, 16-21, 21-16 and later paired up with Shiwangi Singh of Uttar Pradesh to beat third seeds Awantika Pandey and Anupama Upadhyaya of Uttarakhand 21-7, 21-18.

Top seeds Vishnu and Pranav Rao Gandham defeated Bharat and Anmol Joon of Haryana in straight games 21-19, 21-13 in the under-13 doubles final. Pranav, who is also the top seed in singles, defeated second seed Sankar Muthusamy of Tamil Nadu 21-16, 21-12 in just 25 minutes.

Maisnam Meiraba bagged the under-15 boys singles title. The top seed from Manipur made short work of seventh Jayant Rana of Haryana 21-17, 21-8. However, Meiraba and his partner from Andhra Pradesh Srikar Madina, who are seeded second in doubles, were shocked by fourth seeds Ishaan Bhatnagar of Chattisgarh and Priyanshu Rajawat of Madhya Pradesh 24-26, 18-21.

Gujarat Badminton Team Favours Well At The West Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship 2015

West Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship which took place from September 29 to October 2 2015 at the DY Patil StadiumMumbai saw the 15-member Gujarat badminton team which included several senior and juniors players won five of the 10 titles, three runners up titles in the individual events. However, in the team championship, the seniors and juniors went down fighting to Madhya Pradesh in the semifinal 2-3 at the in the .

Aryamann Tandon defeated his team mate Karan Chauhan to bag the junior boys singles title after losing the men’s singles final. Tandon remained the only member of the squad to win singles titles. Rest four titles came in the doubles and mixed doubles categories.

Gujarat team captain and the most senior member of the squad Samir Abbasi said that team’s excellent results were possible because of the perfect combination of young and the experienced. “Our success lied in the juniors doing so well as these days they get so much exposure and get to attend lots of camps and play many tournaments. Our young shuttlers were not overwhelmed by the presence of India seeded players,” he added.

Mrunmayi and Akshaya, Runners-Up In West Zone Badminton Championship, Nagpur – Maharashtra

Nagpur: Mrunmayi, a standard XII student of Shivaji Science College did well in the West Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship 2015 which concluded at the DY Patil Indoor Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.

Mrunmayi helped Maharashtra finish runners-up in the team championship where they lost narrowly to Madhya Pradesh 2-3. Mrunmayi also excelled in her individual event also.

Mrunmayi and Akshaya who are second seeded here dismissed Dipti Kuity and Salvi Shah of Gujarat 21-13, 21-20 to book their berth in the finals, where they lost to the top seeds Emilia Silveira and Pranjal Chimulkar of Goa.

Mrunmayi and Akshaya fought hard but lost 20-22, 17-21 to the top seeds in 27 minutes.

Mrunmayi has already qualified to play in the U-19 girls singles at Jaipur as the state singles champion.

“I am happy to seal doubles berth for Jaipur but equally disappointed for not winning the West Zone crown. We did not play well in the final, otherwise we would have definitely emerged champions. In the team event final too, we missed the title by a whisker,” Mrunmayi told TOI on Friday.

To be noted, The eighteen-year-old Mrunmayi had triumphed at Karad and Latur earlier and Mrunmayi, Akshaya pair are the state U-19 girls doubles champions too.

Mrunmayi and Akshaya will be pairing for the forthcoming Junior National Badminton Championship, Jaipur from November 30 to December 6.

Both the finalists are eligible to play in the junior nationals representing the West Zone region.
