Seeded Shuttlers Have It Easy In All-India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton

HYDERABAD: There were no major upsets in the quarterfinals of the ONGC All-India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament at the Pullela Gopichand Academy on Friday.

Top seeds in boys’ singles Pranav Rao Gandham (U-13), Maisnam Meiraba (U-15) and Mansi Singh (U-13) and Jakka Vaishnavi Reddy (U-15) in the girls’ singles made it to the semifinal stage.

While Pranav struggled past sixth seed Bharat, other top shuttlers faced no such issues. After winning the first game 21-18, Pranav lost the second 19-21 but recovered to clinch the decider 21-17.

He will now face fifth seed R.K. Upananda, who downed Pranay Katta 21-12, 17-21, 21-14. In the lower-half of the draw, Gopichand’s son and fourth seed Pullela Sai Vishnu registered a straight-game victory against eighth seed Anmol Joon 21-16, 23-21. Vishnu will square up against second seed Sankar Muthusamy, who eased past 16th seed Aman Gupta 21-17, 21-13.

In the boys’ singles last eight stage, Meirba had it easy against Gautam Walia 21-19, 21-10 and will face sixth seed Koya Sai Charan for a place in the final. Charan ousted Priyanshu Rajawat 21-17, 21-16.

The other semifinal will be between seventh seed Jayant Rana and Bhavin Karamchandani. While Rane trumped Ayush Raj Gupta 21-10, 21-12, Karamchandani rallied to beat Jaiditya Pratap Singh 21-14, 19-21, 21-17.

Vaishnavi Reddy will face third seed Richa Muktibodh in the under-15 girls singles semifinals. Second seed Gayatri Gopichand and her training partner Samiya Imad Farooqui have also reached the last four stage. All the four winners recorded straight game victories.

Malvika Bansod Is India No. 2 in U-15 girls singles

NAGPUR: Malvika Bansod, a student of Centre Point School, Dabha has progressed well in her badminton career this week where she has raised to her career high as India No.2 in her U 15 girls category. She has a overall of 1125 points to her credit while the first possition is shared by Aakarshi Kashyap of Chattisgarh and Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy of Telangana with 1200 points each.

She got selected in the Indian Side where she will took part of the Indain Badminton team ever first time her badminton career where she participated in the Asian Junior Championships.

She was ranked No. 8 when she started off this year, her runner up position at the last all India tournament at Gulbarga and a match point loss in the U-15 girls’ singles final against Gayatri Gopichand put her in the No.2 spot.

“It was a pleasant surprise for me. For the last one year, I was trying to crack into first four rankings, which would have enabled me to get selected for representing India in overseas tournaments. I want to give all the credit to my coach Kiran Makode,” Malvika told TOI on Wednesday.

Other ranking results includes, Gayatri Gopichand and Vaishnavi Reddy, U 15 Girls Doubles rank No.1, Ritika Thaker and her partner Simran Singhi of Mumbai suburban No. 2.
