Benefits of Warm Up

Running pic
A Running Pose. (Image Courtesy: www.quora.com).

Warm-up and cool down are done by most athletes before or during their training regims. The main reason for doing warm up is to increase the blood flow to the working muscles which results in decreased muscle stiffness, this increases flexibility of the important working muscles. So one’s preformance can be increased and risk of injury is minimum.

Warm up also has one more important benefit, the physiological and psychological effects for a athlete. A warmed muscle has increased temperatures thus procviding more elasticity to the muscles to make them to contract more forcefully and relaxe more quickly, which ultimately results in increased speed and strength.

It also reduces the resistance of the blood flow to all parts of our body, lowering stress on the heart.

One should wear the correct apparels and accessories which will not distrub your warm up or training regim.

By activating the heat-dissipation (efficient sweating) mechanisms in the body,  an athlete can cool efficiently before-hand and help prevent overheating early in the event or race which can also have an negative impact on one’s sport.

Before starting off the warm up keep in mind that the perfect warm up is a very individual process that comes only through practice, experimentation and experience. One should try warming up in various ways, intensities and levels until which works best for you.

New Points System in IBL 2013

The organisers of Indian Badminton League have brought in a new point system to be used in IBL 2013.

ibl-logo

Here is a quick snapshot of the changes to the rules

  • Each match will be played as a best of three sets – if the players win one set each, then the third set will be only for 11 points (and not the usual 21 points). Whoever gets to 11 points first in the third set is the winner.
  • In each of the first two sets in a match, there will be a sixty second break after 7 points and another 60 second break after 14 points.
  • In the third set, there will be a break of 60 seconds after 6 points.

These changes appear to be there mainly to accommodate sufficient advertisements for television viewing and also to try and get the five matches completed in three hours.

When the scoring system was changed from 15 points to 30 and then 21 points, many felt that the test of strength (both mental and physical) was being compromised to make the matches fast and attractive to the television audiences and the advertisers – now with further changes like these, I am guessing we are almost there with the full commercialization of badminton.

Lets see how the players and the audiences take this.
