HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Hunters suffered their second straight defeat at home as they lost to Chennai Smashers 3-4 in the Premier Badminton League at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.
Even before Hunters played their trump match, the hosts were out of the contest losing three of the first four matches. Hyderabad’s move to change the mixed doubles combination backfired as Carsten Mogensen and Jwala Gutta failed to put up a fight against Chris Adcock and Pia Zebadiah of Chennai. The match ended in just 16 minutes to silence the Indo-Denmark combination 15-7, 15-7.
Lee Chong Wei got Hyderabad back into the contest with a three game victory over Sony Dwi Kuncoro 15-3, 12-15, 15-8. Needing a victory to keep them in hunt, Hyderabad banked on Parupalli Kashyap. But Kashyap disappointed the home crowd once again losing to Simon Santoso 12-15, 12-15.
In the crucial women’s singles, which was also the trump match for Chennai, P.V. Sindhu recovered from a mid-match slump to overcome Kathenthon Supanida 15-8, 14-15, 15-5.
In mixed doubles, Carsten Mogensen and Markis Kido of Hyderabad defeated Chris Adcock and Pranaav Chopra of Chennai 15-12, 15-13. Though they lost the tie, this victory is important because Hyderabad secured two points from this match and the semifinalists are decided on points.
