The Instant Review System, also called as ‘Hawk Eye‘, the latest innovation in badminton sport, makes the best use of technology to the core for the benefit of the badminton game.

Badminton is a sport that contains high level of passion, commitment, aggression, emotion and also an added vigour to it. whenever a rally gets a wrong line call from an line umpire after a hard fought rally, the player gets frustrated, and may even occur as a turning point to lose or win his game of badminton to his opponent at a crucial juncture, often the player distracts away from the game or even has a chance to have a heated argument with the line judge.

So, to avoid such circumstances, the BWF Council agreed introducing an Experimental Law allowing player’s to challenge linecalls when an ‘Instant Review System’ is in operation on that Court.

The Instant Review System comprises ultra slow motion cameras focused down the court lines which sends images to a control position near the Referee. The Umpire signals the operator whenever a player challenges for a line call and the operator will display the images to the Referee, to be played at different speeds and stopped frame by frame. He/she will then decide to uphold the Linejudges/Umpires decision or can overturn it.

The system makes use of an ultra-slow motion instant replay which will provide the information for the Referee to decide immediately whenever the shuttle lands and the call made by the line judge (or Umpire overrule), and before the commencement of the serve for the next rally.

When challenging a line call, the player should clearly say ‘Challenge’ to the Umpire, also by raising one’s hand or arm at the same time. However, a player or pair has only two rights to challenge line calls or Umpire overules of line calls per match.

If a line call, after review, is found correct against the players challenge, then the player/pair loses one right to challenge.

If the player/pair incorrectly challenged twice then they lose any further right to challenge during the match.

If the player/pair’s lin call challenge is successful, then they retain the right to challenge and do not lose it.

This setup is active while the game is live and provides instant results for the total arena satisfaction thus avoiding any further discripencies.
