Ashwini Ponnappa has created a sort of ripple in badminton circles by announcing that she will be playing in October 2013 again with her old doubles partner Jwala Gutta.
Ashwini’s tweet yesterday was:
“Next set of matches are in oct where @Guttajwala & I would play women’s doubles and @KonaTarun n I mixed doubles. Looking forward to it :)”
This is a very interesting scenario, especially given the fact that Jwala Gutta went on a self imposed exile after the London Olympics last year. Ashwini had partnered with Pradnya Gadre ever since and the two of them were making good progress and had reached within top 50 in Womens Doubles ranking this year.
It is quite interesting to note that Pradnya Gadre had been offered the highest package for the Indian Womens Doubles player in the recently concluded Indian Badminton League, while Ashwini and Jwala had to take a cut in the original base price set by the IBL organisers.
While Jwala has gained the reputation of being up front and getting into the news for all the wrong reasons, Pradnya has been slowly getting on top of the rankings in Indian womens badminton.
I am guessing with this new pairing, Ashwini and Jwala must be aiming to come back to their best forms to be the number one womens doubles team in India. Good luck to Ashwini and Jwala.
